I’m turning thirty in a couple of weeks.
Inspired by my friend who became a vegetarian when she turned thirty, I’d like to celebrate this fantastic maturing process by making a significant life-improving difference. Being an O blood-type carnivore and all, I probably won’t become a vegetarian, but I would be up for almost anything else: running another half-marathon, learning a new art, returning to the piano, actually flossing my teeth two times a day, or growing kitchen herbs…
But first, I simply must get your ideas for what I could do to celebrate this milestone! Think: “significant- but doable – life-improving change”. What do ya have for me?

Become a gardener! I’m convinced that you will actually like dirt as much as I do. And the living things that grow up out from last year’s efforts (to my amazement every time) is perennially satisfying.
Opps. Not so good with those XHTML “tags” yet!
Don’t listen to Molly – dirt is dirty. HI MOLLY!!!
I’m going to need to think about this. Being the totally selfish person that I am, my 30th b-day thoughts are mostly centered around a nice piece of jewlery or surprise night away at a bed and breakfast…
I would try the gardening thing if I wasn’t already sure that it’s one of things a person must have a natural knack for… But, as I type, I’m on the hunt for some sunflower seeds to plant with Viv. ‘Word is that they’re pretty low maintenance?
Hi Jan! What a cute little boy you have. Where’s all this red hair coming from?!! Must be those sneaky recessive genes…
Laur – no knack needed! maybe kitchens herbs can be your first step. Mmmm…think of fresh basil in your summer salad (though I personally find herbs hard to keep alive).
Right now I’m trying to sprout the seed from an avocado I ate a week ago, …but nothing’s happening so far. Stay tuned for an update.
I really think it is obvious that you should write a book Laura– my first thought was a children’s book, but, maybe a Christian parenting book or perhaps even a child’s textbook for use by home school parents. The possibilities are endless and you certainly have the potential and gifts to do it.
Kari – how wild that JUST before checking my email (which contained your comment), my friend Janet left asking when I was going to write “my book”. Hmmm…
There are no coincidences Laura, only the work of the Holy Spirit.
Exactly. No coincidences, only the work of the Holy Spirit and I am pretty sure that the Holy Spirit is telling you “GET A FACEBOOK!” Julie got one tonight, mom got one tonight, erin has one, I have one, we are missing only one person….30 year old YOU!
(It will be a fantastic new experience. You can keep in touch with everyone! and see pictures of Katie’s new baby )
Facebook is just one of those things I just don’t think I’ll do, Em. It’s WAAAAY too cluttered and jaunty and socially social! I mean, having all one-hundred of my friends on my computer screen at one time would totally overwhelm me. Call me old-fashioned, introverted, what-you-will, but until it really is the Holy Spirit (and not just His wonderful ambassador), I think I’ll work on my garden instead.
Are you really introverted? Like in a Myers Briggs kind of way? I was more in the middle then I think most people would assume. I LOVE to be by myself, but once I’m in a social setting I’m chatty cathy.
This coming from someone who thought she’d never get into “blogging” not too long ago, if I recall.
True, true, Molly. I was pretty anti-blog, wasn’t I? And now look at me! So, maybe I will become a facebooker after all…
Jan – Yes! Introverted in a Myers-Briggs way, believe it or not. I totally need alone time in order to refuel.
the beauty of facebook is that you can turn off the computer and “refuel” whenever you want to
Unlike if you were to have people over… can you just turn people off and “refuel” whenever you want? I think not.
I still think it would be a wonderful way to celebrate your 30th birthday.
LAR- you are not introverted and… I HATE ALL THOSE PERSONALITY TESTS WITH A HOT PASSION!!!
I NEED alone time as well, but I still love people and am commanded to be, and live with them if I want to or not. (i want to ..by the way)
I think your attempts at creating this blogg, (which I love!) show that you very much want yourself be known to people. Deep or not. I also always thought that of your journals as well. Secretly, don’t you dream of someone finding them one day and reading them?
yeah…facebook does not have to be surface-y AT ALL! I reconnected with soooo many wonderful people from my past and I am soooo glad. I actually get together with them too! I am all about deepening relationships, but also embraceing my acquaintances as well.
If you look at Jesus and his interactions, he did both. As he walked down the street he was showing and interacting on all amounts of crazy levels with everyone!
He revealed/is revealing all the mysteries of himself with the whole world, yet HE has rock solid relationships with God his father/ and the 12 disciples.
shoot..i miss u
love ya muchly
and HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MOMMY TODAY!
