I have been reading your blog for a while now, but never commented
… I love this because the first time I ever remember something like this was when I was doing Five in a Row with my oldest daughter. She was in 5 and we were reading “A Pair of Red Clogs”. It’s a great book and it’s written from the little girl’s point of view. In it the girl talked about how she looked at her mama and she was smiling at her, like she always did. That really struck a chord with me. I wanted my children to be able to say the same about me. Since then there have been several moments like this, but that will always stick out in my mind

Yes! You’re right! The mother in that story is so admirable, isn’t she? So gentle and wise, letting the little girl come to her own conclusion and learn a valuable lesson. Thanks for adding that one to the list.

My husband and I started doing a lot of reading aloud together before our little ones came along. A couple of my favorites that have influenced my parenting we read when my youngest was just born. Little Women and Jo’s Boys made a big impact on me. I’m pretty sure my boys aren’t ready to read those books, but I’m excited to read aloud with them when they are!
We’ve been reading the Grandma’s Attic series by Arleta Richardson. I love how Mabel’s parents — and Mabel herself, as she retells the stories when she is a grandma — tie in Scriptural principles with Mabel’s (mis)adventures. So much can be learned through a good story!
Oh, All-of-a-Kind Family and Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle… those bring back such good memories! I need to read Understood Betsy. I’ve heard of it but I don’t think I read it growing up.
We’re reading the Little House ones just now…. Caroline’s patience and general demeanor really gets me every time. Not to self: Be more like HER!
