Christ said it about following Him: “consider the cost…” He wants His disciples to face the sacrifices up front, and to make our decision based upon the truth. He knows that if we are surprised by the struggles, oppositions, and crosses along the way, we might lose heart and become offended by Him. So throughout Scripture, He is very open about the price of Christianity. There is no small print to trick us into blind faith. There’s no wondering, “What’s it going to cost me?” We know the answer: it costs everything. Those of us who are Christians have decided that it’s a deal. So we said, “yes”.

We’d be wise to apply His advice to Social Media. We’d be wise to consider the cost…

Every post I write takes my attention away from household needs.

Every email I send takes time away from my family.

Every facebook status I update takes affection not given in person.

Though I believe that Social Media platforms are worth some of my time, attention, and heart, they are not worth all – or even most – of my time, attention, and heart.

When it comes to Social Media, you are as good as your avatar.

Online, you are simply your own created character. It’s hard to admit, but it’s true. Everything that I tweet and post comes from me, but it’s not really me. It’s just bits and pieces that compose the online “Laura Booz”. There’s no denying reality: I am not my avatar, and my avatar is not me. (Take a deep breath. It’s going to be okay.) Once we admit that our avatars are just our creations – characters who represent us – we can make some positive decisions about who we are online.

Actually, as Christians, this is an incredible opportunity. I can decide the identity, mannerisms, and behaviors of the woman who tweets and posts as “Laura Booz” so that she is a light. In doing so, the real Laura Booz is a light because she is using her character to offer insights, instruction, and encouragement to others.

There are couple of important things to remember concerning “the other woman”…

The question usually goes something like this: Would you rather have lots of power, lots of money, or lots of fame? The assumption is that these things tickle our fancy and – on our worst days – motivate our selfish side.

Although my answer is the least practical and I wish I could change it to “money,” it sings out from my inner celebrity: I’d rather have fame. Truly. I would love for everyone to know me and adore me. (Maybe it has something to do with my love language: I’ve got a sweet tooth for words of affirmation that asks, “Do you like me? Do you like me? Do you like me?”)

Sometimes I feel like my desire to be “popular” drives my Social Media decisions.

Get Your Christmas Catalogs!

Now’s the time to make sure you are receiving the Christmas catalogs that contain the best Christmas presents.

These ministries do such a good job describing the needs that we can meet all over the world through monetary gifts. The personal testimonies, stories, and photos help all of us to remember the very real people who need Christ and tangible gifts this Christmas. This year, we’ll wrap the catalogs and give them to the girls the day after Thanksgiving. We so much enjoy reading them together and choosing, as a family, how we can give lasting gifts at Christmas.

I highly recommend paging through these catalogs with your children, and finding ways to give a Christmas gift to Jesus himself:

Gospel for Asia

Samaritan’s Purse

Heifer International

Partners International

Food for the Hungry

What Sisters Say

They both like dresses.

They both like a good science kit.

And, yet, they are so different. The difference pops out on days like today when…

On the same day, my three year old asked, “Momma, won’t I look so beautiful if I dye my hair pink?!” And my six-year-old, freshly fascinated by the play on words between “optical illusion” and “optional illusion,” asked, “Mom, according to the definitions, do you think it’s even possible to have an optional illusion?”

Thoughts about the PSU Tragedy

There are so many, many sad things regarding the recent goings-on at PSU. Other people have written and spoken about them with such eloquence, that I will just add a few things to the conversation. Here are some things that I’m glad about…

I’m glad that no one is exempt from having God’s light shine on any detail of life. It’s good to know that I couldn’t become too rich, too famous, or too powerful to ever completely hide my sin from Him or you. I need to know that. I need to know that at any moment, God can pull off my disguises. Although I’d like to think that transparency is optional, at the end of the day, it’s mandatory.

I’m glad that our society cares so much for children that we would rally together – the legal system and all – to defend them. It’s especially beautiful to see so much compassion for boys, who don’t typically receive as much protection as girls. I’m deeply glad to know that we love children and believe they should be defended, protected, and respected. This is a treasure. Tragically, it is not this way in other places worldwide.

I’m glad that we can come boldly before God’s throne and ask Him for help. Will you join us? Beginning today, a large community of Christians all over the world are gathering in prayer for PSU. I signed up to receive specific prayer requests sent to my inbox over the  next 30 days. You could, too. Read more at my friend, Chris’ site csheinz.com. Please extend the invitation to anyone you know who cares for PSU.

I’m glad to know that God has equipped people to counsel and help in cases just like this. I think about Diane Langberg and her coworkers at American Association of Christian Counselors, who have worked for years and will continue to work for the healing of the human soul. Langberg’s book Counseling Survivors of Sexual Abuse is remarkable. None of us is helpless to help. If you haven’t yet heard a message of redemption on the recent events, listen to Dan Nold’s sermon. If you haven’t yet heard a noble radio segment, listen to Bob and Dannah Gresh speak with Focus on the Family.
