Our Plans for Valentine’s Day

Ryan and I made the mutual decision to stay home for Valentine’s Day this year. The girls will enjoy an annual Valentine’s Day shebang with some friends in the afternoon. In the evening, I’m finally going to jump in and try my hand at a Valentine’s Day Dinner. To keep things fun and simple, I think we’ll try the Heart Shaped Pizzas that I read about here and bring out the fondu pot for a chocolate-covered strawberry dessert. I’m sure we’ll sit on the couch and read through the girls’ Valentine cards (a tradition my father started with us many, many years ago!) and then, we’ll tuck all of the kiddos into bed, make these Molten Chocolate Lava Cakes that I have been eying for a full year, snuggle up by the fire, and watch Courageous together.

What are your plans?

Every year my family of 5 and I spend Valentine’s Day all together. I traditionally make seafood fettucine for my husband and I and the children have mac and cheese or something they really LOVE! We all eat by candlelight. After everything is cleaned up from dinner we do a scavenger hunt around the house. Our children are 7, 4, and 2. In the end they each usually get some small trinket from the dollar store or a book to read. This year it’s books since my oldest devours them and LOVES to read!

Thanks for your blog Laura, I check it every morning!!

We’re kind of celebrating tomorrow! We’re going to a 4 hour marriage conference called “Knot or Noose” at a local church, so that will be our together time! Then tomorrow night, we’ll drop the kids off at our church for parents night out hosted by our college ministry. We’ve got a few gift cards from Christmas so we’ll have a nice dinner out. Tuesday night, I’ll cook something… haven’t decided yet. I’m planning a heart shaped brownie ‘sandwich’ for dessert, filled with raspberry whipped cream! My hubby loves brownies! We’ll probably get the kids to bed early, because my hubby has late classes on Monday night and Tuesday evenings he’s pretty wiped out! That will give us some together time!

I’m such a bad momma. We’re not doing anything special for Valentine’s Day. Not even a nice dinner. Leftover beans and cornbread, anyone? ;)

But it’s okay. I’d rather be at home eating a humble meal with my guys than spending money eating out (and stressing myself out). If I had planned better we could have had a special, inexpensive dinner in, but I just didn’t think about it. Kiddo says he hates this particular holiday (he’s twelve…enough said), so I will respect that enough to not go all googly on him. However, he will get a handmade card from me, just the same. So will my precious husband…I mean, what’s Valentine’s Day without a card, but who says you have to go to Hallmark to get it? :)
