Face Mistakes Like a Champ!

It’s inevitable: you and I will make mistakes.

Our children will make lots of mistakes.

Some days, a house full of humans is a house full of mistakes!

Our response to mistakes makes all the difference in the world between a healthy home and an unhealthy home. Instead of breeding denial, callous consciences, or the fear of failure, why not deal with mistakes the way God does? As forgivable lessons to be learned.

Thanks to Turansky and Miller*, we’ve adopted a catchy response to mistakes.  ‘Turns out, a few simple words can untie the knots of regret, remorse, and guilt. They can lighten the heart and strengthen the spirit. (Truth be told, I use this phrase for myself more than for the girls. I really need a healthy dose of it every day.  Here’s hoping that as I let go of perfectionism, people-pleasing notions, and inordinate amounts of unnecessary guilt, everyone else in my family is encouraged to do the same!)

Here’s Lia with the magic words:

Advertising Fail

(Be prepared: You will never think of me the same again.)

Several weeks ago, many of you enjoyed Vivienne’s adorable “Tuna-Fish Salad” how-to. (What? You missed it?! Oh, you’ve just gotta watch it before you read on, okay?)

I watched the numbers of viewers grow and grow, and thought maybe we could make a buck.

(Shameful, I know.)

I’m new to the concept of advertising and making blog-money, but I decided to jump in and give it a go! I emailed Follow Your Heart, home to Vegenaise (our family’s beloved alternative to mayonaise) and asked if they wanted to use the video in some way for advertising.

(It gets worse.)

A very kind rep emailed back explaining that they thought the video was adorable, but couldn’t use it to advertise their product, because they’re a VEGAN company and can’t really promote their product being mixed with meat.

(I’m totally embarrassed. How in the world did I miss that?! With a name like “Vegenaise”, they aren’t exactly hiding that fact.)

I apologized all over the place, and the rep freely forgave my over-sight.

She sent me a handful of incredible coupons and a vegan Vegenaise recipe book (should we want to make another cooking video).

Wouldn’t you say the folks at Follow Your Heart deserve a standing ovation for gracefully helping this carnivorous mom to find the way?

(I’m not giving up on the advertising thing, though! More on that tomorrow.)

(I love your company! Please subscribe and follow along…)

Let Him Fly

Did you know that most men define “nagging” as being told to do something once – if it’s in a degrading, complaining tone?

A couple of years ago, my nagging on Ryan got way too incessant. It was actually during a personal prayer time that the Holy Spirit practically spoke out loud to me, “LEAVE THE GUY ALONE.” He gave me the idea to say nothing negative to or about Ryan for 30 days. Of course, it was so difficult at first; I had developed a way of thinking that needed to be completely reworked. But after a week or two, I started to experience the beauty of letting him go… Here’s more:

This has been my most hypocritical blogging week ever.

And today’s post beats ’em all. (Hi, Honey! Get ready for a good laugh…)

In this vlog, I’ll share with you the power of being sweet…

but, in my home, I’ve been so cantankerous.

Yes, “cantankerous” is the perfect word to describe how I’ve been behaving. Especially at night. When I’m exhausted. And still have things on my “to do” list. And I’m just done. Decidedly not sweet.

Oh, Father, may the fruit of your Spirit shine through me despite my circumstances. Revive me through my own words today. Help me to be sweet.

SO, let’s sit back and watch this one together.

What is a Wife??

Yes, you’d hope I would have known!

But, I needed a little brush-up.

Once I started to do some serious praying and reading on the subject, I discovered some truths about our role being much much more than I ever imagined.

Perhaps this is old news to you, but did you know that we are actually created to be strong military aid for our husbands??

When you have a good five minutes, I’d love to share with you what I discovered:

We will do anything to keep the heart beating.

All of the other organs may break down, but if our hearts are still beating, our loved-ones have hope in their eyes, they press our hands and write us cards. The beloved well-spring of life. We battle through diseases, infections, cancers, and aging, all to keep that heart beating.

And, in the end, the heart is always the last thing to go.

When the heart dies, there is nothing else beneath it that can keep life going.

We talk about that in marriage vows.

until death do us part…

I said those words without the slightest clue what they meant, really.

It was easy to promise that I would never divorce this handsome young man. (“Sure! I’ll say that!” I agreed simplistically.)

But, I know now that the phrase is about so much more than “divorce or no divorce”.

It is about the very structure of our hearts. The everyday treatment of that smiling groom.

I joined my heart in oneness with him, making our marriage together the heart of my whole life.

Vowing that everything else will die before that.

“My marriage will be the very last thing to die… during the times in life when things must die.”

Vowing that I will crucify my time,

my pleasures, obligations, idols,

my addictions, communication quirks, and fears,

my past.

All to preserve my union with that one man.

It’s not doom and gloom. On the contrary, we make that vow with a pursuit of happiness, knowing in our depths that a covenant like this – one that remains when all else fails and fades away – is what makes life whole, blessed – a thing of wonder.

until death do us part…

Because I said it one day, every day asks about it.

“What dies first today?”

I’d love for you to watch this clip just one time during this marriage series so you can know why I like to talk about marriage. I have every reason in the world to hope for your marriage and mine.
